THE FLUME

THE FLUME is a family residence that is tucked away in a quiet residential Neighborhood, very close to Ukkadam Lake. The overall design is influenced by the minimalist philosophy. The planning is carried out as a linear Organization of spaces. As the user walks into the building through the central spine, they can observe a subtle transition from public to semi-private to private spaces, that branch out from the central spine itself.

The design carefully incorporates open-to-sky courtyards into the layout, so that every point inside the building offers at least one direct view of the surrounding scenery. In addition to this visual link, easily accessible decks, terraces, and balconies foster an experiential bond between the home and the unbuilt environment.  Utilizing full-length windows and doors that offer unhindered views of the landscape further strengthens this inside-outside relationship. All of these strategies create a biophilic living environment that supports the user’s mental well-being.

A sloped roof was devised, departing from the vernacular design, to effectively collect rainwater and give the structure a dynamic personality. The water is deposited into a water body right at the entrance, by the butterfly-shaped roof, which progressively becomes thinner as it moves towards the margins and creates a sleek exterior appearance.

At the southernmost point of the property is a servants’ quarters. The majority of the structure is made of plain brick walls and glass, with a few RC cladded walls that add a vibrant character to the exteriors.
